Photos of some of the vegetation and reptiles
living at Valley of the Sun
There is a photo of a salamander, frogs, mossy rock, rose hips
and wild rose bush, white barked trees
and red branch shrubs below. Please wait for this page to load as there

There are many frogs that I see in my yard during a certain time of year here at
Valley of the Sun, which my yard is not
that close to the ponds. This frog in the photo above was in my yard
July 14, 2008. My yard is all gravel with no surface water so I guess that
is why I find them hanging out around the roof water I save in a barrel, trying
to get in I suppose.
This one year, there were so many baby frogs everywhere in our yards, it was hard not
to step on one. At some point in the year there are so many frogs
croaking at night. These frogs are not that big, but I have also seen
larger bull frogs in my yard, as well as on the gravel road that leads up to the gold
mine. If you like frogs legs?
Frogs can be seen hopping around anywhere here at Valley of the Sun.
Here is a photo of a Salamander found in a yard at Valley of the Sun
There are bull rushes, wild roses, white bark trees (are they white poplar or maybe white birch
are not sure), and there are also many red coloured shrubs growing around these lakes.
Some of these white barked trees have very large trunks, so they must have been growing
there for years.
We noticed at the base of the the trunks of these white trees that the white
bark is not as white, its more of a grey colour and the bark is not as smooth
but instead its cracked looking.
These white bark trees almost look like they are a cross between two types of
trees, part one type at the bottom and part another for the rest of the way up.
Here is another photo of some of these white barked trees.
These white bark trees seem to grow pretty tall as
seen in this photo we took.
Here is a photo with some of the leaves that fell on the ground and off the
white bark trees. There is also a rock or something with green moss
growing all over it ... maybe its an old stump? This green moss was found
near the furthest and largest pond Dec 10, 2008.
These trees may be poplar trees (not that sure yet). This information we
found below about White Birch trees do not really describe this location at Valley of
the Sun around the ponds, as it
doesn't look like this area has been burnt or cut, but it is very wet and the
trees are getting lots of light. Will have to do some more research
and will post it here if and when we figure it out.
About White Birch Trees (Betula papyrifera)
A native British Columbian species, this tree is easily recognized by its
smooth, white peeling bark. Intolerant of shade, white birch (Betula papyrifera)
thrives on burned-over and cutover areas. It is found throughout the British
Columbia Interior, but only in a few scattered places on the Coast. Birch
constitutes less than 1% of the province's total growing stock.
About White Poplar Trees (Populus alba)
There are many wild rose bushes growing around the Valley of the Sun, and they
grow all over this area. You can see some rose hips in the photo below.
You can also see many white bark trees.
There are bull rushes growing around all the Valley of the Sun ponds, as well as
blond straw looking grass like what is growing in the middle of this pond.
We know bull rushes need water to grow.
This photo is a mixture of vegetation we wish to point out.
There seems to be many of these red branch shrubs (shown in the right side of
this photo above) surrounding the lakes. You can see there are red
rose hips in the left of this photo as well as bull rushes and straw grass
looking vegetation growing on the lake
bank in behind the red
branch tree. There are also some of the those white bark trees growing
around this Valley of the Sun lake (which this is the lake we figure has the most water).
Just look at the different colors in this photo at the start of winter, aren't
Here is another photo with some of those red branch shrubs in it.
Don't know much about trees and shrubs so don't really know what type of red
branch shrubs these are,
but they really show up red and the bush in some locations around these lakes
are thick with them.
In this photo you can see how these red branch shrubs stand out behind the white
Here is a couple photos of some mushrooms breaking through the pavement on
Balsam Road at Valley of the Sun near the spring that we are told runs all year
round. It was funny because one day Okanagan Lake was wondering what some
very young children were doing on Balsam Road and so we asked, and then we heard
back from their parent, stepping on mushrooms LOL. There seems to be more
than just one patch of mushrooms breaking through the pavement on Balsam Road at
Valley of the Fun.
Here is a photo below of a wild rose bush growing alongside Firwood Road near
the entrance to Valley of the Fun on June 8, 2007. We do live in gods
country .... not that we are religious, as this is just a saying!
This photo was taken looking into Valley of the Sun subdivision and you can see
the sign down the road a little ways on the left hand side welcoming you to
Valley of the Sun or something to that effect (the little white spot is the
sign).... there may also be a block watch sign there too (not sure). Even
though we live here LOL... okanaganlakebc.ca is kinda stupid regarding that
sign for some reason. We do know there is another sign here at Valley of
the Fun that says something about illegal dumping across the road from this rose
bush, as we took a photo of it in the past. Its located high up on a tree.
We are just waiting for someone to paintball it LOL! These signs kind of
ruin the natural atmosphere. It seems there are many human signs all over
the place these days LOL and not just the board type! okanaganlakebc.ca
feels everyone should have access to the internet so real estate signs and
bulletins are not required. For instance, what we are referring to are all
the real estate signs at the corner of Westside Road and Westshore Estates and
all the bulletins that blow off the bulletin boards at the entrance to each of
the subdivisions. For instance, this is the result of one of the last wind
This bulletin board is located at the entrance to Valley of the Sun. These
bulletins were blown off this bulletin board by the wind and laid on the ground
there for weeks.
We have complained to RDCO, the North Westside Communities Association, as well
as our Central Okanagan West director Jim Edgson about the bulletin board
problem, but we have yet to receive a reply, and its been over a year now.
It seems that our complaint email has gone into outer space and got lost, never
to be heard from again!
Okanagan Lake prefers the look of the wild rose bush welcoming everyone to
Valley of the Sun rather than the bulletins laying on the ground around the
bulletin boards and human designed real estate signs littering the landscape.
Check back every so often to see what we have been working on. We are sure
this will be an ongoing project until time is up.
