VALLEY OF THE SUN, SHALAL ROAD, AND MUIR SUBDIVISION

WANTING A COMMUNITY WATER SYSTEM

This webpage is made up of photos of the one singular smallest pond located at Valley of the Sun subdivision not shown on the maps, as well as maps showing where water wells are located near Valley of the Sun.  There are 4 ponds grouped together at Valley of the Sun and then there is one small pond by itself in someone's yard.

This page may take a while to load as there are many photos on this page.... just have patience.  Maybe have a game of solitaire while it finishes loading if you are on dialup.

Click refresh to be sure you see updates.

LAST UPDATE January 25, 2015

Blue Divider Line

These photos are of the smallest of all the ponds, which we call the singular pond because it is not grouped together with the other ponds.  Most of these photos below were taken July 27, 2008 unless otherwise stated with the photo, and are of the one pond at Valley of the Sun located all by itself and located on the opposite side of Firwood Road from the other 4 ponds.  So there is actually 5 ponds in total at Valley of the Sun unlike most of the maps show.

Photo of a pond that is part of an underground stream that runs down Firwood Road at Valley of the Sun
This photo is taken of the middle of the pond that is located on the left hand side of Firwood Road about half way into Valley of the Sun, and is located farther away from the other 4 grouped together ponds.

Photo of a pond located on a stream that runs down Firwood Road at Valley of the Sun.
This is a photo of the left side of this same pond.  This photo was taken July 2008.

Here is another photo of the same pond.
This photo shows the pond that sits by itself away from the other ponds at Valley of the Sun
This is where the water exits the pond.  The person who owns this property and has lived there for almost 20 years, said the fire trucks have drawn water from this pond in the past for fire fighting purposes.  There are at least two water licences on this same underground stream and maybe three according to Water Act Interests map below.  This photo was taken in July 2008.

This photo shows where the water exits the pond at Valley of the Sun on Firwood Road
This photo was taken July 2008 and shows the water running out the end of the singular pond which the water would run out to the right hand side in this photo and run down towards Okanagan Lake.

Here is another photo of this same singular pond we took on Dec 10, 2008
Photo taken Dec 10, 2008 of singular pond between Balsam Road and Firwood Road.
There wasn't much water coming out the end of this singular pond on Dec 10, 2008 when we took this photo, but there was still a trickle.  Its hard to tell what those green shoots are in this photo but those are green bamboo looking shoots growing around the pond.  Not sure what the name of those things are, but they usually grow where there is lots of water.

Not only is there enough water for this pond but this same underground stream surfaces behind this pond and runs down to Okanagan Lake missing the pond all together.  In this photo below you can see the green bamboo looking shoots ... that is where the spring runs behind this pond.
Vegetation surround and behind this singular pond in someone's yard that lives half way up Firwood Road.

Here are photos below showing how much water misses the pond.

Photo showing the water running out the one end of a pond on Firwood Road at Valley of the Sun.
This is a photo we took July 27, 2008 of the water running out from behind the singular pond.

Here is another photo we took Dec 10, 2008 of the water running behind this one singular pond.  It was still running out on Dec 10, 2008.
Photo taken Dec 10, 2008 of the water escaping from the singular pond at Valley of the Sun.
This is almost the same photo as above, just taken at a different time of year on Dec 10, 2008.  It is hard to see exactly where this water comes from but we believe it comes out of the ground there as you cannot see where there is any above ground stream beyond, and it is hard to tell as there is thick brush there.  Can't see where the water enters the pond either.  There is still water coming out of this spring on Dec 10, 2008 and it does look like it runs all year round as the 20 year owner of this property has said.

These pond photos above that were taken in July 2008 were sent by email to Hilarity Hettinga (RDCO Engineer) in July 2008 to pass onto the geologist.
This pond is on the longest underground stream that runs through Valley of the Sun, and this stream does surface in this one yard half way up Firwood Road and flows into this singular pond.  This underground stream is shown on the map as the longest stream that runs through Valley of the Sun and down Firwood Road basically.

Blue Divider Line

This map shows Water Act Interests at Valley of the Sun which we believe mean water rights or licences.

Valley of the Sun Water Act Interests
Those orange pipeline looking marks on the map above are most likely pipelines for current water licences, etc..
Those blue lines on the map above are the underground streams.  There is one long underground stream that runs down Firwood Road which this stream runs all year round.  This stream runs through the pond in the photos above and there are at least two water licences on this stream.  So now you know about some of the water that is in the longest stream that runs down Firwood Road by looking at the pond photos.  There is at least one cistern I am told by the pond property owner and its on that same stream which is located one or two lots over from the pond photos above and in behind that singular pond towards Balsam Road.  There a thick bush there and its hard to see anything.  Its soggy too and we didn't want to walk in there.

This photo below is of a well just off Balsam Road at Valley of the Sun not far from the small pond in the photos above.  This well is currently supplying water to at least 2 households.  You can't exactly see the well on the Water Rights map (above) but you can see the pipe in about the middle of the map.  This well is located at the left end of the pipe that runs horizontally.  This well feeds 780 Firwood Road and at least one other property at 674 Firwood Road.  Not sure if it doesn't feed one more property because it sort of looks like there is another short piece of pipe in the map above.

This is some of the vegetation surrounding the well in the photo above.  You can see plant types that thrive on water here.  I looks pretty marshy surrounding the well.

This is a map of some of the wells located near Valley of the Sun

The blue triangle dots are the recorded wells and the red dots are the unrecorded wells that we know are here from talking to people.  We marked in the red dots meaning unrecorded wells, and we did not mark in the blue dots for the recorded wells, as they were part of this map.

Map of approx. 25 well locations at Valley of the Sun
How many wells did you count on the map above?  This is what we counted

recorded wells = 18
+
unrecorded wells = 7

so in total 25 wells at Valley of the Sun

Not sure how many of these wells have dried up or have no water, but it would be interesting to know.
