Free water after boil notice
Castanet.net - Nicholas Johansen - May 25, 2017 | Story: 197914

West Kelowna residents who have been placed under a boil-water notice can now access free bulk water.

The notice was issued Wednesday after Tuesday's storm surge on Okanagan Lake, causing treated effluent to be discharged into the lake from the Westside Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The boil-water notice was issued for anyone who draws drinking water from Okanagan Lake, within 300 metres of the temporary wastewater bypass near Pebble Beach, south of Gellatly Road.

The service has also been extended to other lakefront property owners who use their own water intakes.

The water can be found at a filling station at the corner of Shannon Lake Road and Asquith Road. Users must bring their own containers and hoses.

The free water has been treated using filtration, UV radiation and chlorination, and will be offered during the duration of the water-quality advisories.

Water Quality Advisories for Three RDCO Water Systems

The Regional District of Central Okanagan has issued precautionary Water Quality Advisories for residents served by the Falcon Ridge, Killiney Beach and Westshore Estates water systems.

The advisories affect approximately 55 properties connected to the Falcon Ridge system off Highway 33, more than 280 properties serviced in the Killiney Beach subdivision off Westside Road and 265 properties in the Westshore Estates subdivision off Westside Road.

Increased turbidity in each of the three water system sources from high runoff has resulted in water quality that might impact children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. Roadside sign notices will be in place in each area advising of the water advisories.

"Interior Health has been contacted," says Communications Officer Bruce Smith "and while the health risk is modest and no bacteria have been found in any of the water tested from the systems, Regional District staff recommends that as a precaution that Falcon Ridge, Killiney Beach and Westshore Estates water customers follow Interior Health guidelines, especially for those with weakened immune systems, the elderly, children and those wishing additional precautions. All water intended for drinking, washing fruit and vegetables, making beverages, ice or brushing teeth should be boiled for at least one minute or customers should use a safe alternative to water from the tap such as bottled or distilled water."

This precautionary water quality advisory will continue until further notice.

Boil Water Notice Lifted for Star Place Customers

The Regional District of Central Okanagan, in consultation with Interior Health has removed the Boil Water Notice for eight properties served by the Star Place Water System off Trepanier Road in the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area.

Recent water sample results have indicated turbidity levels have returned to acceptable safe standards recommended in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality.

As a result, customers of the Star Place system no longer have to boil any water that may be used for drinking, washing fruit and produce or brushing teeth.

The boil notice has been in place since May 5th due to possible health risks to the elderly, newborns and those with weakened immune systems as a result of higher than recommended turbidity in the source of the water system.

Water Quality Advisory Ends for Westshore Water Customers

A Water Quality Advisory has been removed for residents served by the Westshore Water System off Westside Road in the Central Okanagan West Electoral Area.

The lifting of the Advisory this morning by the Regional District of Central Okanagan was made in consultation with Interior Health.

Communications Officer Bruce Smith says, “The lab results from test samples of water taken from the upper Mountain Reservoir distribution area confirmed no evidence that the water supply for almost 150 properties connected to the reservoir was contaminated. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience caused since the advisory was initiated last Thursday afternoon in response to vandalism our staff found at the reservoir. When it comes to water safety, there’s no messing around and whenever any risk is identified we enact our emergency response procedures. That’s why when we learned of the situation Thursday afternoon our emergency plan kicked in and in order to protect public health we announced the advisory would be in place until we could completely confirm the safety of the water supply and that the water wasn’t compromised.”

Smith adds, “In order to further increase security we’ll be installing fencing around the reservoir site, which is in a remote area above the Westshore subdivision. This unfortunate act of vandalism caused a major inconvenience for our customers and cost additional funds for staff to flush the system and in getting water samples tested. We take water quality and protecting the water supply seriously and encourage anyone witnessing suspicious activity around our water facilities to contact the RCMP.”
