These are photos of the 4th pond at Valley of
the Sun that looks like it holds the most water.
This webpage is made up of photos of the 4th pond located at
Valley of the Sun subdivision, as well as maps showing where water wells are
Valley of the Sun subdivision. There are 4 ponds grouped together and then
there is one small pond by itself, so there are 5 ponds in total.
This page may take a while to load as there are many photos on
this page.... just have patience. Maybe have a game of solitaire while it
finishes loading if you are on dial-up.

This is a map of some of the wells located near Valley of the Sun
The blue triangle dots are the recorded wells and the red dots are the unrecorded wells
that we know are here from talking to people. We marked in the red dots
meaning unrecorded wells, and we did not mark in the blue dots for the recorded
wells, as they were part of this map.
How many wells did you count on the map above? This is what we counted
recorded wells = 18
unrecorded wells = 7
so in total 25 wells at Valley of the Sun
Not sure how many of these wells have dried up or have no water, but it would be
interesting to know.
We walked even further into the bush on Dec 10, 2008 and came across this 4th pond (on
the map its the pond on the furthest right which is shaped
like a cigar... but it looks more like a lake than a pond. These two
photos immediately below were taken about the middle of this cigar shaped lake.
See the log laying in the water across the lake ... that log is in both this
photo as well as the photo above. If you put this photo beside the photo
above you can see just how long this section of the lake is, but it is much
longer than you can see in just these two photos. We couldn't get a photo
of the whole length of this lake at once its so long. Plus in these two
photos you can see there are bull rushes growing.
This is a photo of the one end of the lake near where the water runs out when
We don't see any melted spots in the ice on this lake.
This photo was taken Dec 10, 2008.
Here is a good photo of that red branch shrub. There is a road like this that runs all around these ponds/lakes.
In this photo you can see where the road dips, that is where we saw the water overflowing
from this lake and running all over the place. One neighbour said he saw a
moose at this end of the lake, and someone else has said they saw a moose near
Valley of the Sun as well. See that red branch looking shrub in this photo ... these
red branch looking shrubs are growing all around these lakes. There are
many wild rose shrubs growing around these ponds/lakes as well. There are
a bunch of tree branches and shrubs piled up at this end of the lake which are
piled up pretty high when you are standing there in the dip and in front of the
pile looking at the lake (it's hard to tell the pile is that high in this photo)
this is where the water runs out over this road, so the water must get pretty
high here at times during spring runoff. The pile we are talking about in
this photo is that darker brown looking pile behind that tallest blond coloured
grass in the dip alongside the dirt road.
See that one tall lonely tree sticking up on the right side of the lake .. you
can see that tree in two of the photos above where the log was laying in the
We took this photo on Dec 10, 2008 of the 4th pond we came across and stood in
the dip of the road looking at this cigar shaped lake to take this photo.
You can see some of the brush that has washed up there where the water leaves
the lake (near the bottom of this photo). This lake looks like it has the most water
comparing to the others, and looks deeper than all the other ponds/lakes as there is not much grass or
anything sticking up in the middle. This lake is very long and you can't
see the other end as it goes even further up around the corner to the left yet.
Maybe we could make this one lake a little deeper yet and have lots more water??
Maybe we could make a small little dam beside the dirt road ... unless it would flood
properties doing that.... we are not sure, but that is something maybe we should
look at to see how feasible it would be if we need more water than this???
Maybe we can't use this lake for potable water? Has this water been tested
we wonder? Maybe we can use this lake water for fire protection and irrigation purposes?
Maybe it freezes down below though too, and maybe it wouldn't work during the
winters freezing months for fire protection?
A few years ago we seen water flowing all over the place during spring runoff
out the end of this pond/lake shown in the photos immediately above (which this
pond is the long narrower pond on the farthest right side shown if you are
looking at the map) and
water was running far away and across the bush road that
travels from the front
of Valley of the Sun, you know that gravel road directly across from the Valley
of the Sun mailboxes, which this road goes thru Ewings Landing and ends up
coming out on Attenborough Road at Westside Road. Well part way
down that dirt road before you get to Ewings Landing, where the 3 fridge garbage dump
is, well just before that, this is where the water was crossing over the bush
road where its low there. You can see tire tracks from people driving
through the mud and leaving ruts there.
We also heard from a neighbour that this year the pond didn't overflow all over
the place though too. We were not out to see for ourselves, so cannot
confirm this, but this information did come from a reliable source whom lives in
Valley of the Sun and is a regular hiker whom has said they even
walked up to the White Elephant Gold Mine, which is a good long walk.
Kudos to the walker! That is a very good long walk!
If anyone does decide to go for a walk out here and the bears are not in
hibernation, make lots of noise as you are walking through the bush. I was
alone on my journey around the lakes, so I kept coughing because I forgot to
bring something I could make noise with on my journey LOL. Who knows maybe there are still a bear
or cougar out as it was a very warm day. It was kinda scary being alone ... I have heard there was a
cougar down at Killiney Beach and I kept thinking and hoping a cougar wasn't
stalking me. It would be better if the cougar had two of us instead of
just one of us! Just
Here is a photo from nearer to the other end of this same lake
This photo was taken Dec 10, 2008 nearer to the end of the cigar shaped lake
closest to Firwood Road. This cigar shaped lake seems to be fairly long with
lots of water.
